What is the difference between a marriage license and a marriage certificate?
* Typically, couples obtain a marriage license, hold the wedding ceremony, and then have the person who performed the ceremony file a marriage certificate in the appropriate office within a few days.
Obtaining a Marriage Certificate
* Once a Marriage Licence is issued, the ceremony can take place.
* After the marriage ceremony, the bride and groom receive a Record of Solemnization of Marriage. (This is not a Marriage Certificate)
* The person who solemnizes the marriage forwards documentation to the Office of the Registrar General for registration.
* Visit the Service Ontario website, Click Here to apply online for a Marriage Certificate.
